Mixing Screenshots

On the right we have a screenshot of the mixing process of the track "Dazed". As you can see the track features drums. guitar, bass and vocals. All of the instruments were recorded one take. The vocals however were done in multiple takes which I then went on to comp.  Here we have the mixer screen of the track "Dazed". This shows the final levels of all the instruments.  You can also see the effects used on the individual channels and how I used colour coding and busses to tidy up the screen to make my work more efficient.  The only effect that is not made visible on this mixer is the WAH effect I used at the guitar solo. Where its placed under the guitar pedals section. In the next picture we can see the mixing process and final edit of the opening track "True Colours" Yet again everything is colour coded to make mixing more efficient. Like in "Dazed" I had to comp the vocals in order to complete them. I also did this with the lead guita...

Recording Pictures and videos (3)

In this picture and video we have Ali Smyth recording bass for the EP. We have him plugged straight into Logic ProX into the Macbook. We are using an interface instead of an actual amplifier to save time and make the editing process easier and more flexible. The lead guitar parts were also recorded in the same way In the Second video I have Lucia recording her vocals into a microphone which also goes directly into Logic ProX on the Macbook. We took multiple takes of her vocals which I will later go through and chop up the best parts together.

Recording Pictures (2)

This is a picture of how the guitar parts were recorded. As you can see we simply placed a SM58 up to the amplifier. The amplifier used is a Class A valve amp made by Laney. The guitar was plugged into the low infidelity setting and by using a microphone it allowed me to gain all the tonal qualities of the microphone.  Instead of  placing a microphone on the bass amp we simply plugged an XLR in the line out of the AMP and ran it directly to the mixer. Although this could be said to sound toneless I will later mix and produced the channel to have a vibrant and healthy sounding tone. The AMP being used is the Fender Rumble 100.  Another picture of how we recorded the Bass parts.  From this picture you can see how we used the Glyn Johns technique to record the drums. There is more about this technique on the research section of my blog. We ran all the channels to be recorded into the Logic Pro X audio interface. This was because at college we have e...

Funk/Soul Musician Brief

As both the genre and the musicians i am using on my EP have changed I have had to create new briefs for the musicians i am working with.  For Vocalist (Lucia Tillson) The genre of music we will be working on together will be a fusion of Funk and Soul. I'd like the lyrics and vibes of the song to be somewhat similar to the work of Rex Orange County. As we are working on this project as a collective I will largely expect you to take a lead in lyric writing however I will of course assist you in doing so if needed. You will be needed on three out of the three tracks. Two of them featuring a drummer, guitarist and bassist and the final just being guitar and vocals. Preferably i'd like to try and avoid cliches in the lyrics you/we write. You will be working on this project with me as a creative member of the project and your say will have a big impact on the direction of the sound of the music. For Drummer (Nathaniel Ruben) The genre of music we will be working on togethe...

Blues Rock Musician Brief

For Drummer (Rhys Battle): For these track I want to get a drum style that matches that of Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. I want the drums to fill out the gaps of the music and to work well and fall under the category of Blues Rock. A lot of the important drum parts I will write my self and navigate you on how I want them to be played however for a majority of the grooves and patterns it will remain very simplistic and I will expect you to be able to figure out what to play for those simple parts. The tracks will require numerous fills and you will be required to use more than just the Kick, Snare and Hi-hat. You will most probably have to use the as before mentioned and on top of that all three toms the crash and ride in order to achieve the tone I want. You will be serving more as a session musician rather than a creative partner however any opinions you have on tracks are wanted to be heard and all feedback/thoughts are welcomed.  For Bassist (Jaymie Porter): As I underst...

Blues Rock Writing

All of these videos are just little snippets of my writing process for the original concept of the album. Although all of these idea have now been scrapped from this album due to the change of genre I do hope to use some of these in the future as a part of a different project.

Recording Set Up

Piano Writing

Although I am not particularly talented at the Piano I do find it refreshing to step away from my instrument of choice (the guitar) to try write music on an instrument I am not use to playing on to see if I come out with any new sounds. These videos are some of the results of that.
